The British gaming sector experienced a shared sense of ease as Paul Scully assumed the role of Gambling Secretary. Scully, the third individual to occupy this post in 2022 alone, introduces a necessary feeling of steadiness following a turbulent phase.
His forerunners, Damian Collins and Chris Philp, both stepped down amidst the upheaval of Boris Johnson’s exit and the ensuing shift in authority. This constant rotation of ministers had delayed the highly anticipated gambling reform white paper, leaving the sector in a state of uncertainty.
With Rishi Sunak now in charge and Scully appointed, there’s renewed optimism that the white paper will finally be released. The wagering industry, as represented by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), has applauded Scully’s selection and conveyed their readiness to collaborate with him and the new DCMS leader, Michelle Donelan.
The BGC stressed the significance of finding a middle ground between oversight and sector expansion, aspiring for focused actions that tackle problematic gaming behaviors without hindering the industry’s progress.
Our goal was to enhance the safety and fairness of gaming for all participants. By elevating industry benchmarks, we aim to safeguard susceptible individuals and ensure a worry-free and enjoyable experience for every player.”
